Go ahead, let people stare with these eye-catching “Taylor Time” tips…
Taylor: It’s “Taylor Time!” Hi, I’m Taylor Baldwin and I’m here with Kim Admire. Today we’re talking about one of the most beautiful parts of the body, the windows to the soul, your eyes. Now, Kim is an optometrist and she owns a very chic eyewear boutique called Optique Del Mar which makes her the perfect expert to tell us how we can obtain optimal eye health and to fill us in on what’s hot in the way of sunglasses for 2012.
Kim: Thank you so much for having me, Taylor.
Taylor: I’m so happy you’re here. Let’s get started on how to achieve optimal eye health.
Kim: Okay. Well, your diet is the biggest and best weapon here. The things you know you should be eating for optimal body health is going to be the same thing for your eyes, basically. A diet that is high in antioxidants, so basically your fruits and your vegetables. The deeply colored ones particularly are full of Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Those are the main three that can affect your eyes.
Taylor: Can you give us a sample of which ones? Are you talking about the orange ones, red ones?
Kim: Basically, the ones that are deeply colored with reds and oranges are going to contain a lot of Vitamin A. So they contain carotenoids, like carrots, cantaloupe, red and orange bell peppers. So, those are the ones that will have high levels of those vitamins.
Taylor: Perfect. What else can I do, because I know we all eventually need reading glasses. And obviously, nobody wants to go to reading glasses.
Kim: Sure.
Taylor: What can we do to slow down the aging process of your eyes?
Kim: You cannot slow down that process, unfortunately. Everybody will need reading glasses, not because of poor health but just because of a normal aging process that’s happening within the eye, with the muscles and the lens, etc. Maintain a healthy diet and protect yourself from UV exposure will help maintain optimal distance vision.
Taylor: I have a question. I’ve had people say to me: “Well, you know, I’m in graduate school and I read so much, and now I need reading glasses. I’ve strained my eyes, and now I need reading glasses”.
Kim: Right.
Taylor: Is that true?
Kim: Well, you will hear about it all the time, and certainly it is true that people will become aware that they need reading glasses or glasses at that time, not because they’ve damaged their eyes. They haven’t done anything that they could have prevented, but because they had an uncorrected refractive error they were not aware of until that particular time.
Taylor: So, there.
Kim: Exactly. It’s very common.
Taylor: Could too much UVA or UVB exposure cause you to need reading glasses earlier?
Kim: Not to read. No, but it will definitely damage the internal structures and external structures of your eye.
Taylor: Which is why it’s important to get quality sunglasses to protect your eyes from UVA and UVB exposure.
Kim: Definitely. It’s true.
Taylor: So, let’s answer a question that a viewer asked me.
Kim: Sure.
Taylor: They wrote in saying that they really want to invest in those eyelash products that promise to lengthen and thicken eyelashes, but they were worried about the safety and efficacy of the products.
Kim: Yes.
Taylor: Can you tell us about which one you would recommend?
Kim: Well, there are a lot of them out there. Some of them are not particularly effective. Most of them are not particularly effective. This one we know is definitely effective, and it is also very safe. It’s been through rigorous studies, and it has obtained FDA approval. So, we know that this is a good one. Latisse is applied just at the eye line, basically, where the lashes end. It will give you, as you can see, beautiful long, luscious eyelashes over time.
Taylor: Yeah. So, I told Kim a month ago that I wanted to do this story, and she had me start using it. I will tell you my eyelashes are twice as long. I used to do these “Taylor Time” episodes, and I would put false eyelashes on the tips of my eyelashes. I don’t have to do that anymore.
Kim: There’s no need. Yep.
Taylor: So, I actually was cutting them down because they were touching the top of my eyelid.
Kim: Isn’t that a nice complaint?
Taylor: But I had to tell you and I did notice my eyes were a little irritated at first, when I first started using it, but it did go away within about a week which I was happy to see.
Kim: Yes.
Taylor: So, now I have these long, thick lashes but my lashes are blonde, so you can’t see them. So, here’s my beauty tip for you. One of my “Taylor Time” team members found this product and had me try it. It’s called Beyond Mascara from Benefit, and it’s amazing. Look at my eyelashes. Can you see them?
Kim: They are luscious.
Taylor: Somebody asked me the other day if I had eyelash extensions on. I said, no.
Kim: Yeah. It looks like you are. Yes. Exactly.
Taylor: I love it, and I change all of my mascara like I do shampoos and everything, just to see. There are so many great products that are always coming out.
Kim: There are.
Taylor: I always want to try them all.
Kim: Sure.
Taylor: Let’s talk about sunglasses. We talked about how important it is to have quality glasses to protect your eyes from UVA and UVB exposure.
Kim: Right.
Taylor: Let’s talk about what sunglasses are going to be hot for 2012. What’s in style?
Kim: Okay. We’re not deviating too much from what was in style last year, luckily. So, if you still have your 2011 ones, you’re doing OK. There’s always the classic Gucci style, so they’re maintaining a larger frame so you’re getting the protection from the sun with nice detail on the side.
Taylor: Those are gorgeous.
Kim: They’re one of my favorites.
Taylor: Can I keep them?
Kim: Of course, you can.
Taylor: I’m just kidding. Yeah, right. Why do you think I have her on the show? I’m just kidding.
Kim: I love those on you. Those look beautiful, beautiful. And Ray-Ban is really big this year. There are a lot of unisex styles for the guys and the girls. You can see both of these. So, this is the geek chic style.
Taylor: Those are cool. I don’t know if I could pull these off.
Kim: You could totally pull those off. And then, there’s the classic aviator but in a smaller style.
Taylor: Now, what about protection for the eye because I always wanted to buy the bigger glasses to protect, not only my eyes but also the skin around my eyes.
Kim: Actually, as we all know, the bigger the sunglasses, the better it’s going to be as far as protection.
Taylor: That’s right. I can see more light coming in on this one.
Kim: You definitely get more light coming in, for sure.
Taylor: Ray-Bans are hot. I was in Italy a few times last year. It’s the fashion capital of the world, and Ray-Bans are what they’re wearing.
Kim: Exactly. Exactly.
Taylor: Those Italians know.
Kim: And then, for the sports enthusiast, the Oakley is always a favorite. You get a nice wrap, and so you’re being protected at the sides. There’s no incidental sun exposure coming in from the side, and it’s obviously going to hug your head, too. So, it’s going to give you that staying power.
Taylor: Yeah. Those are nice.
Kim: Yeah.
Taylor: And they’re quality. So, why would somebody invest in glasses like these designer glasses? They’re a small investment, as we all know. And you can go to drugstores and they have the knock off look. So, what are we getting if we spend the extra money in buying quality eyeglasses?
Kim: Well, obviously you’re going to get the 100% UV protection, but you’ll also get a quality frame that’s going to stay, basically. If it fits properly on your head, it’s not going to mis-adjust or go out of shape. Like the cheaper ones do. You’ll find that the edges of the frame are well made with designer sunglasses. And so, you won’t find the screws coming loose, things coming apart, basically. So, you’re looking at a well-constructed frame.
Taylor: And they’ll last your lifetime. All the sunglasses that I’ve invested in have lasted years.
Kim: Yes.
Taylor: Some of them are even back in style, like the Ray-Bans.
Kim: That happens, you bet.
Taylor: That’s right. So, keep them in good shape.
Kim: That’s for sure.
Taylor: Thank you for joining us here on “Taylor Time”.
Kim: Thank you for having me.
